October 30th was the five year anniversary of legendary DJ Jam Master Jay’s death, and to pay tribute to him Adidas released a new series of shoes. Adidas owes much of its street and hip hop popularity to Run DMC, so the commemorative shoe is a great nod to the fallen hip hop icon.
The biggest graffiti beef in history? Quite possibly.
Notorious UK graffiti writer Banksy recently was seen hitting a wall on London’s East End that could possibly be a reaction to Obey creator and wheat-paste street artist Shepard Fairey’s recent exhibition in London. Notice the generic flower imagery and the apathetic painter sitting on his paint can, not really putting passion into his work. Or, this might be interpreted as the graffiti art blossoming off of the street (the double yellow lines) and into mainstream culture. Yet still, it might be criticism on both… hard to say.
You decide.
The Fat Al video shoot that went down earlier this summer has finally dropped! Congrats and shouts out to frequent Next customers Al Fatz, Chip tha Ripper, Mick Boogie, Steph Floss, and the entire Dreamlife/8081 crew. Al’s new single “How You Feel” is out now and can be heard blasting through Next Beachwood’s in-store speakers. Act like you know.
Peep the OG Supra Skytop II, the official shoe designed by NE Ohio native skateboarder Chad Muska. You may have seen these joints on Jay’s feet in the Umbrella video not too long ago. The original OG shoe was so hot that Supra decided to bring it back, this time eliminating the silver upper and turning it gold instead. Next will have these in for holiday, so check back with us in December if you want to grab a pair.
This is a behind-the-scenes video from the ‘Home Improvement’ editorial shot by Mario Sorrenti for V Magazine issue #49. But, the best thing about this video is the accompanying music- a crazy remix of Jay-Z’s I Just Wanna Love You (Give It to Me) that’s so different from the original that it took me a second to recognize the song. The editorial is completely f’d up, but fabulous.
An excellent collaboration by two leading brands in the streetwear game. Levi’s, the most trusted denim company and the inventors of jeans, and Stussy, surf and skate wear originators, have teamed up for a limited edition denim release available exclusively in Europe and Japan. The release is comprised of 4 different pieces: a tee shirt, a jacket, and two jeans. The denims are based on - not the iconic 501, but an equally influential 1967 505 Slim Fit, and come two different washes. One is a rigid raw denim and the other a “worn” wash. This is the epitome of premium denim, capturing the unique qualities of raw indigo sevedge and doing it in a way only the Levi brand can.
Wow. The dudes over at InquiringMind caught wind of some swagger jacking going on at a local Urban Outfitters. Seems the store pretty much ganked the exact design from this 10 Deep piece:
They had some choice words for the “urban” store, highlights of which being:
“They say imitation is the highest form of flattery and, granted, the difference between inspiration and stealing is a very fine line, but this is LAME.”
It goes on from there, and you can read the full post here.
